CHAPTER SIX

God’s Thesis Statement

He is the origin and goal of all history. He has the first word in creation, and the last word, in new creation.[102]

—Richard Bauckham

Read: Revelation 21:5

When learning to write effectively, we must learn to make a clear thesis statement. This tells the reader what theme will encompass the entirety of the writing. All of what is written is to contribute to the thesis, defending it, explaining it, clarifying it, and so on.

In the case of the Bible, I would suggest that there is one central theme through all the drama of the biblical plot: new creation. In Genesis, we have the prototype of creation—the first and original creation.[103] But as we saw in chapter 1 of this book, this wasn’t the final intended destination for creation.

Everything in the Bible contributes to the thesis of new creation: demonstrating the need, describing the process of redemption, and promising the finished product of God’s future work culminated. And because the Bible is God’s story, He has both the first and the last word. He is the “author of life” (Acts 3:15 esv). He is the Composer of the symphony of all of history.
